Kebbi, NiMeT ban canoe operations
Kebbi State Government has made public the ban on movement of passengers and cargo in canoes after 6pm; a charge meant to curb safety concerns in the state.
This is in view of the warnings issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency on possible flood disaster in Kebbi State.
Sani Dododo, Secretary of Kebbi Emergency Management Agency, while addressing News men said the warning was necessary to mitigate the dangers and loss of human lives along the waters during night boating in Kebbi.
He said “Water transportation is now only in the day time, from 6 am to 6 pm.”
He added by saying “No more movement at night. Canoe operators and other waterways users must abide by these directives otherwise government will not hesitate to bring offenders to book,”
In view of the new directive, canoes can no longer carry passengers and cargo at the same time.
Also worthy of note is that passengers and cargo must be transported separately to avoid possible mishaps of overloaded canoes.
