Kebbi state government says it will continue to provide moral and material support to National Union of Road Transport Workers NURTW in the state to facilitating its service for economic prosperity.
Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu affirmed this in Birnin Kebbi at the delegate’s conference and swearing-in of the new executive members to run the affairs of the Union for the next four years.
The Governor added that his administration would help the union to secure proportionate loan from the Federal Government on top of what the state government has already advanced to its members amounting to four hundred million naira.
He commended the state Exco for managing the money judiciously from the Bank of Industries under which one hundred and fifteen people benefited with commercial vehicles.
Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu said he would partner with other Governors to seek for more support from Federal Government for the NURTW to expand its operation to some West African countries in transportation of goods.
The Governor requested the National and State leadership to involve women in the membership of the executive council in view of their contribution to the development of the society.
He acknowledged the role of the State Branch in assisting to convey pregnant women to and fro hospital free, which has helped to reduce maternal mortality.
In his address the National President of Union of Road Transport Workers, Professor Ibikunle Tajudeen Baruwa represented by the Zonal Secretary incharge of Zone 6, Alhaji Ibrahim Mohammed Yazid advised the newly sworn-in members to run their administration with fairness, equity and justice to strengthen unity and harmony among members.
Professor Baruwa appeal to them to demonstrates exemplary leadership, capacity and sacrifice, saying that it was only through participating in governance that an economically viable, strong and dynamic union could be build.
The National President thanked Kebbi State Government for its cordial relationship with the union and loan disbursement to members which has enhanced the operation of the members.
The patron of the Union, Hon. Bello Bagudu Wakilin Gwandu represented by Alhaji Sani Dododo commended Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu for his support and assistance to the Union.
He affirmed commitment of the union to working in harmony with the state government, security agencies and Federal Road Safety Commission to improve the road transport sector.
In his welcome address the Deputy State Chairman, Abubakar Aliyu Zuru requested the state government to stop the menace of loading passengers outside motor parks for safety and security measures.
In a goodwill message representative of Federal Road Safety Commission, State Deputy Route Commandant, Ibrahim S. Waba Sani requested members of the Road Transport Union to adhere to traffic rules and regulations as well as avoid overloading, dangerous driving and driving under the influence of drugs.
In his acceptance speech, the new re-elected Chairman Alhaji Usman Bagudu pledged to work for the progress of the Union and the state.
The new Executive Members were sworn in by the representatives of the acting Chief Judge of Kebbi State, Justice Sama’ila Haruna Rasheed at the Presidential Lodged, Birnin Kebbi.
